Improving Week by Week at the Track
This week Dustin was back at Southern National Motorsports Park. We were able to make another test day on Friday before the race and saw improvement in his times on the track. From the previous week, Dustin’s times were down 7/10 of a second. That is a big improvement.
No day at the track ever goes without any issues. We pushed the car to the exit of pit road and when we went to start it, it wouldn’t do anything. After 20 minutes of searching the electrical system, we found the master switch for power was broken. We were able to get the switch removed and the wires together so that it would make it through the day.
On race day Saturday, Dustin improved a little more and was able to qualify 4th out of 9 cars this week. Again, this is a great improvement from the previous week. On the first lap going into turn one, Dustin was trying to get down to his line and there was another car just at his rear bumper. It caused him to spin out but didn’t bring out the caution. He was now the 9th place car and had a lot of ground to make up. Two laps later, Dustin was up to 7th and got a break when the caution came out for another driver. Now 7th on the restart, Dustin passed the 6th and 5th place cars in one lap to get back to the 4th place position where he would finish the day at.
It was a good learning experience for him to have to come from the back. His overall improvement for the weekend was 1.1 seconds on the clock. Now we begin the search for 10th of a second to get him to the front of the field and getting some finishes in the top 3.
Special thanks to Wayne Oakley for all the work he did on the car last week in preparation for the weekend and all his help at the track on both Friday and Saturday. Great guy to work with and is making a huge difference in the improvements in the times that Dustin is running. With his help, a win is not far away!
